Lifetime Achievement Award 2019 to Cav. di Gran Croce and President Emeritus of The Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK, Leonardo Santi Simonelli

Lifetime Achievement Award 2019 to Cav. di Gran Croce and President Emeritus of The Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK, Leonardo Santi Simonelli

Another well-deserved and meaningful praise has been awarded to our President Emeritus, Leonardo Simonelli Santi, on the occasion of the Scottish Italian Awards Gala Final, which took place in Glasgow on the evening of the 10th November 2019.

The Scottish Italian Awards, now in their 7th edition, are one of the most prestigious contests in the country, organised every year by our member Paramount Creative UK, and supported by the Italian Chamber of Commerce, to celebrate the excellent work of Italian businesses in Scotland. Every year the best and most deserving enterprises in Scotland are awarded by a panel of experts for their major contribution in each category. This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award has been awarded to Cav. Di Gran Croce Leonardo Simonelli Santi for his praiseworthy and significant commitment in promoting business between Italy, Scotland, and the UK.

His career has spanned a period of over 60 years, mainly in the sector of finance and commerce in Italy, America, and the UK, achieving top positions in international saving banks in London and many Italian and international companies. His business adventure in Scotland started because of Osvaldo Franchi, father of Leandro Franchi, President of our Scottish Board: together they organised for many years various events with London Italian Club in Scotland. After being appointed President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK in 1996, Dott. Simonelli made an immediate impact by setting up a branch in Scotland, guaranteeing the first official point of contact for businesses between Scotland and Italy. The first branch was opened in Glasgow in the office of Franchi LLP. Subsequently, he opened a fully manned office in Melville Street in Edinburgh, next to the Italian Consulate.

Other than working with Italian Institutions, e.g. the Italian Consulate General in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and supporting Italian businesses in Scotland, he also focuses on developing and strengthening relations with the Scottish Government, local authorities and the Scottish Chambers of Commerce. In recent years, this has been evidenced by reconstituting the twinning between Edinburgh and Firenze and Glasgow and Torino. Memoranda of Understanding were recently signed on behalf of the Italian Chamber of Commerce by our esteemed former President.

During his long and successful career, his efforts have led him to be recognised some of the highest awards by the Repubblica Italiana for his extraordinary achievements over the years. In June this year, he decided to step down as executive President of the Italian Chamber but continues to contribute as President Emeritus, remaining in charge of the Scottish Branch which he holds so dear to him.

Congratulations President Emeritus Simonelli for this outstanding recognition!
